Celebrating a Successful Year

As the year draws to a close, I wanted to share some of the great work that’s happened in Long Beach to improve our quality of life, keep our neighborhoods safe and clean, and meet the needs of residents.

From new parks and roads to an improved website and energy efficiencies, and from awards for technology and equality to enhanced disaster preparedness and emergency responses, the City of Long Beach continued to provide better, more efficient service to the entire community.

The City's accomplishments and accolades are featured in the 2015 Year in Review, an easy to read 28-page color brochure.

Here are just some of the highlights:

  • Unemployment rate in Long Beach reached a seven-year low  
  • Reached a cost-sharing agreement with the Army Corps of Engineers for the East San Pedro Bay Ecosystem/Breakwater  Study
  • Launched a new, redesigned City website
  • 6 miles of sidewalk replaced, 23,800 trees trimmed, 77,700 graffiti sites cleaned
  • 195,000 calls for service responded to by the Police Department and 70,000 calls for service responded to by the Fire Department
  • 7,877 Code Enforcement cases resolved
  • 56,000 customers served at the Development Services Permit Center
  • Top 10 “Digital City” for the fifth consecutive year, for the City’s outstanding efforts in using technology to serve its residents
  • Perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index  
  • 33 new Police Officers and 20 new Firefighters graduated in the 2015 academies
  • Approved a project agreement for the development of a new Civic Center  
  • Generated over $5.2 million in earnings in the investment pool, an increase of almost 80% over the prior year
  • Achieved an 18% reduction in homelessness
  • Hosted our first “Beach Streets” cycling event, with 30,000 people participating
  • Provided over 10,000 health assessments and health-related services to low-income children and youth under the Child Health Disability Prevention Program
  • 100% of the City’s beaches received “A” grades for water quality from the Heal the Bay Summer Report Card
  • Launched a $6.1 million citywide LED Streetlight Retrofit Program, which will reduce energy use, lower costs, and reduce carbon dioxide emission
  • Implemented AlertLongBeach, a new mass notification system that replaces the Reverse 911

 Our city staff work hard to deliver important services, and I’m proud of the many accomplishments we’ve had in 2015. The new year promises to be another great year for the City of Long Beach, and I want to thank all of the city staff, as well as our residents and our City Council for all their contributions to our community.
