New Commissioners Appointed
I am proud to announce nine recent appointments to City commissions. These community leaders are committed to ensuring our city prospers and grows. I also want to congratulate the five new members of the Port of Long Beach's Grants Advisory Committee. This committee is charged with providing direction in awarding more than $45 million of port mitigation grants over the next few years.
I look forward to working with our new commissioners and the port advisory committee.
Port of Long Beach’s Community Grants Advisory Committee
Hon. Gary DeLong – Gary served as Councilmember for the 3rd District and has lived in Long Beach for more than 30 years. During his time as a Councilmember, he was Chair of the Budget Oversight Committee and the Federal Legislation Committee, as well as Chairman of the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority and the Los Cerritos Wetlands Authority. Gary also serves on numerous boards and committees in Long Beach and is the President of TMSI.
Hon. Irma Archuleta – Irma has a proven track record in administrative management, educational leadership, project development and implementation, and community involvement. She has worked in both the California Community College and California State University systems, where she served in administrative roles and taught political science and ethnic studies. She is a retired administrator and a former Long Beach City College Trustee.
Joanne Davis – Joanne is a developer of financial management programs for statewide campaigns and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce for six years. From 2011 to 2012, she led the Chamber as chair. In 2010, Joanne, a small business owner in Long Beach, was named the Small Business Advocate of the Year by the California Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Sabrina Sanders – Sabrina supports student academic programs at the California State University Chancellor’s Office. Recently recognized for her mentorship of young adults pursuing a career in higher education as one of the Long Beach Post’s “top 40 under 40,” she has served as President of the Hamilton Neighborhood Association, is a Commissioner on the Long Beach Community Investment Company board, and is a member of the North Long Beach Whole Village Initiative.
Kathleen Irvine – Kathleen has been a landscape designer, consultant, and teacher since 1991 and is an active member of the Long Beach community. She currently serves as President for the Willmore City Heritage Association and as Vice-Chair of the Sustainable City Commission. She has received many awards, including the Woman of Distinction Award from State Senator Ricardo Lara, a Go Long Beach Award and the Spirit of Downtown Award from the Downtown Long Beach Alliance.
Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Commission
Matthew Peterson – Matthew is a business owner in the 3rd District and for two decades has invested in restaurants, bars, and music venues throughout California. Since 2009 he has been a managing partner of the Shore Restaurant Group in Long Beach.
Transactions and Use Tax Citizens’ Advisory Committee
Miles Nevin – Miles is completing a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration at California State University, Long Beach and is Director of the President’s Office at Long Beach City College. Miles currently serves as Vice Chair of the Citizen Police Complaint Commission and as a Member of the Lakewood, Long Beach, and Signal Hill Redevelopment Agency Oversight Boards.
Human Relations Commission
Zoe Nicholson – Zoe is a long-time writer, researcher, and published author. She is a member of Clergy & Laity United for Economic, Justice, and Convener and President of Pacific Shore NOW. Zoe holds a Master’s Degree in Social Ethics from USC. Currently appointed to the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission, Zoe is looking forward to working with the Human Relations Commission.
Gio Ferraro – Gio has long been involved in the Long Beach community, working alongside Back on My Feet, Mental Health America, the Multi-Service Center, Beacon for Him, and the Villages of Cabrillo. Gio is Chair of the DLBA Public Safety Committee and volunteers extensively to provide services for the homeless in Long Beach. She is a small business owner in Long Beach.
Board of Examiners, Appeals, and Condemnation
Ethel Powers – A long-time resident of Long Beach and a graduate of both Long Beach City College and CSU Long Beach, Ethel has actively promoted the growth and development of the city’s arts and youth population through her involvement in general education programs. She would like to continue serving her community as a board member.
Citizens’ Advisory Commission on Disabilities
Jessica Marquez – As an individual with a visual impairment, Jessica has learned how to empower not only herself but her community in order to address the difficulties faced by disabled people. Jessica teaches Communication Studies courses at CSU Long Beach, focusing on disability studies and societal misconceptions of people with hidden disabilities. Her research examines the history of policymaking for people with disabilities.
Long Beach Transportation Company Board of Directors
Michael Clemson – Michael has a passion for transportation. He is an avid cyclist and Long Beach Transit rider, and believes one of the critical things that makes a city great is having diverse transit options, including public and active transportation. In his role as the Energy Program Manager for the CSU Office of the Chancellor, Michael works directly to promote energy efficiency and sustainability. He is dedicated to minimizing our carbon footprint and is excited to bring his expertise to the board.
Senior Citizen Advisory Commission
Jo Prabhu – As a senior living in the Long Beach community, Jo has fought to improve the lives of other seniors. She helped conduct studies and collaborate with the Department of Transportation and Street Management to extend the time needed to cross streets for seniors and people with disabilities. She would like to become more involved with improving the transportation services available throughout the city for disabled seniors.
Veterans Affairs Commission
Gustavo Orozco – Gustavo is an ambitious, hard-working student at CSU Long Beach in the Geography and Environmental Science & Policy Department. After serving in the Army, Gustavo has become involved in several Veterans organizations in the Long Beach area, including the Long Beach Veterans Day Committee, U.S. Vets Long Beach, the Veterans Resource Center at Long Beach City College, and the SVA Chapter of CSU Long Beach.
