The Long Beach College Promise has been an incredibly successful initiative and has won national recognition for the support it gives to Long Beach students, including a free semester of tuition at Long Beach City College. One of my first acts as Mayor was to bring the City into the Long Beach College Promise as a full partner, and to support expanding the Promise to include a goal of universal preschool, increased internships, and additional support in college – including more scholarships.
Now, thanks to the incredible work of Long Beach City College and the LBCC Foundation, we just announced that the Long Beach College Promise will offer a FULL YEAR OF FREE TUITION to all local high school graduates who attend LBCC and remain in good standing. This is not only great news for our students and their families, but for our entire city, because the best investment we can make in our long term economic development is the education of our youth.
I want to thank our partners at LBUSD, LBCC and CSULB for consistently showing outstanding leadership in support of our young people and their education, and for so quickly responding to our call to expand scholarships to a full year. We’ve also added more than 800 new pre-school seats and many new internships opportunities over the past year, with more to come.
With the support we give to our students, and with our high performing schools, Long Beach is a model for educational systems across the country. The expanded College Promise Scholarship will help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to access quality college education right here in Long Beach.
Thank you Long Beach City College and the Long Beach College Promise!
