Yesterday I was proud to
announce one of the most exciting projects happening
in our city. We are building the first Urban
Educational Farm in Long Beach.
The New City Farm, which will be operated by New
City Schools will be a working farm that will add
green space to our community and provide exciting,
hands-on educational opportunities to students and
community members. The Farm comes out of a
partnership we facilitated between the Long Beach
Housing Development Company and the New City School.
The New City Farm, located at 15th and Long Beach
Blvd, will include:
- Vegetable Gardens for students and the community.
- A variety of Fruit Trees.
- Outdoor Classroom with classes on gardening and
healthy living.
- A Chicken Barn for raising chickens and growing
eggs.
- A Working Windmill.
- And a store that will sell fruits and vegetables
grown at the Farm.
Produce will be bought and sold on site
and community residents will be able to work on the
farm and enjoy this natural sanctuary in the heart
of an urban environment. Not only is this farm an
opportunity for students to learn first hand about
agriculture, economics, biology, and many other
subjects, it is also part of our continuing efforts
to enhance a neighborhood that has historically
lacked green space.
The Farm is also only one block away from the new
Skate Park we built, and the new Basketball Courts
that we are building this summer.
The Farm build day will be on June 10, and
volunteers are needed. If you want to volunteer to
help build the Farm, please contact my office at
district1@longbeach.gov, or call 570-6919.
