Jobs For Vets Proposal
The
men and women of our Armed Forces risk their lives
every day to keep us safe and free, and they deserve
all our support when they come home.
Last night, I proposed a voter initiative for the
November ballot that would help ensure Long Beach
does everything possible to show our gratitude and
support for veterans. I’ve brought forth two changes
to the City Charter that would enhance the support
we extend to veterans returning to the civilian
workforce, and to their families.
Currently, veterans receive 10 additional points on
civil service exams when they apply for jobs working
for the City of Long Beach City and at the Port of
Long Beach. I’ve proposed that we increase that
benefit to 15 points.
Also, spouses of veterans who are killed in action
or disabled in military service can also receive
these extra points on their hiring exams, but only
when their spouse is at least 30% disabled. The
initiative I’ve proposed would allow spouses to get
the additional points if their spouse is 10%
disabled. This change would extend employment
opportunities to many more spouses of disabled
veterans, and make our policy fairer and more
compassionate.
These two changes can not only strengthen our
economy by supporting veterans in their transition
to civilian life, but will make it clear to everyone
that the City of Long Beach supports our vets 100%.
The City Council will hear this full proposal in the
next couple weeks, and if they agree to place the
item on the ballot, I will be working hard to ensure
this measure’s passage in November.
Go Long Beach!
