Proud of Our Vets, Proud of America

Every November 11, we honor all
the brave men and women who have risked their lives
to keep us safe and free. Our veterans have earned
our admiration, respect, and gratitude. We live in
the greatest country on Earth because we have stood
up to the greatest challenges at critical moments in
history. Our veterans are incredibly impressive, and
we need to ensure that they receive our full support
when they come home.
Last week, I had the honor of speaking at the Long
Beach Veterans Luncheon and riding in the Veterans
Parade in North Long Beach. I was asked to speak at
the luncheon as the author of last year's "Jobs for
Vets" initiative, Measure C. Measure C was placed on
the City ballot in November of 2010, and Long Beach
voters overwhelmingly passed the measure at the
ballot box, affirming their gratitude for our
veterans.
I proposed Measure C to ensure that Long Beach do
everything possible to show our gratitude and
support for veterans when they come home and look
for jobs. The measure made two changes to the City
Charter that enhanced the support we extend to
veterans returning to the civilian workforce, and to
their families. Thanks to Measure C, veterans
receive extra civil service points when they apply
for jobs in the City of Long Beach and at the Port
of Long Beach. In addition, Measure C gives civil
service points to spouses of veterans who are killed
in action or disabled in military service
These two changes now strengthen our veterans in
their transition to civilian life.
We have an obligation to serve those who have served
us, so let's always thank our veterans - every day
of the year.
I hope you have a safe and happy holiday,
Robert Garcia
