Supporting our Veterans this Independence Day

As we all get ready to celebrate Independence Day with friends and family, I wanted to take a moment to wish you a happy and safe Fourth of July, and to share a few thoughts about this great country we live in.

We all know we are extremely lucky be Americans, and to be able to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities this country offers. No nation on Earth has done more to support equality, freedom and justice. We certainly aren’t perfect, but we have continually made progress, and right now there is great cause for optimism about the future, thanks to the indomitable American spirit.

One way to honor this holiday is to give back to the country that has given us so much. One way to do that is by supporting our veterans, who have risked their lives to keep us safe and free. Back in May, I committed the City of Long Beach to ending veteran homelessness in 2015, and as we approach the 239th anniversary of our nation’s birth, I’m glad to be able to report that we have made good progress on that goal, providing permanent housing to 45 veterans in just the month of May alone. At this rate, we will be able to provide housing for all of our homeless veterans well before Christmas. That’s really something to celebrate this weekend!

The City of Long Beach offers many opportunities for fun and recreation this holiday weekend, and I hope you’ll have the chance to spend some time outdoors enjoying our community with your loved ones, and to take time to be thankful for everything we have.
